Midfielder reflects on FA Youth Cup exit

O’s U18s midfielder Steven Alzate admitted the side’s disappointment having not played to the best of their ability in the 3-1 FA Youth Cup loss to Leicester City.

Goals from Ethan Hodby, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Layton Ndukwu put the Foxes in command of the tie, before a late penalty from Tristan Abrahams saw the O’s get on the scoresheet.

Josh Koroma had a first half effort cleared off the line and Alzate believed that would have changed the complexion of the game completely.

“We pushed and gave it everything but we were unlucky to lose the game,” he told leytonorient.com.

“Leicester are a good side, but I felt in the first half Josh’s effort crossed the line and if that would have stood the game would have been different. We played well, but we didn’t play to our best ability. “

The O’s trailed 1-0 at the break and having come from behind before this season Alzate always felt they had a chance to get back into the game.

“We still had hope going into the second half because our team never give up,” he added.

“We have been behind a few times in games and always come back. We kept pushing but when Leicester got the second and third goal we knew it wasn’t going to be our day.

“We did pull one goal back right at the end but unfortunately we didn’t have enough time left to get back in to the game.”

The defeat is the first the O’s have tasted all season, and Alzate knows it is all about bouncing back from this disappointment when they face Northampton Town in the league tomorrow.

“We had been unbeaten all season and that run had to come to an end at some point, but we can’t let this defeat affect us.

“We have to keep going, raise our heads and go again on Saturday against Northampton. Throughout our career we have to go through nights like this and it is not a nice feeling but we have to bounce back.”
