Coaching Staff Profiles

Martin Ling - First Team Manager
Place and Date of Birth: Forest Gate, July 15 1966
MARTIN was in charge of the club's successful under-19 side in 2000/01, winning the Football League Youth Alliance league and cup double and an international tournament in his one season as Youth Team Manager - a role which laid the foundations for his current job.
A creative midfielder, he began at Exeter City in 1984 and made over 120 appearances before moving to Swindon Town in 1986 for £25,000.
However, just three months later, Southend United paid £15,000 for his services and he went on to play over 150 times for the Roots Hall outfit scoring 37 goals before switching back to Swindon in March 1991 for £15,000 after a short spell on loan at Mansfield.
Playing under Glenn Hoddle at the County Ground, Martin was an integral part of the Robins side that beat Leicester City 4-3 in the 1992/93 play-off final at Wembley - a game in which he was named man-of-the-match.
After playing in the Premiership the following season, he went on to sign for the O's in the summer of 1996.
Again making over 150 appearances for a club to take his career total over 600, Martin appeared for the O's in the 1998/99 play-off final at Wembley.
He ended his playing career with a couple of months at Brighton at the end of the following season before returning to Brisbane Road as youth coach.
After Paul Brush left the Club on September 27 2003, Martin was promoted to Caretaker Manager and then on December 20 2003 he was given a contract for the job until the summer of 2005, which was subsequently extended by a further two years during the 2004/05 season.
He became the first O's manager in 36 years to achieve automatic promotion when he led the club to third place in League Two in 2006, and he was rewarded for his efforts with another two-year contract, which was further extended after keeping the O's in League One.
Martin now holds the prestigious UEFA Pro Licence qualification - which allows him to coach at the top level of the game.

Dean Smith - Assistant Manager
Place and Date of Birth: West Bromwich, March 19 1971
DEAN was a popular choice to return to the club as Youth Team Manager in January 2005, less than two years after playing the last of his 255 matches for the club.
Five months later, with the departure of Ian Culverhouse at the end of the 2004/05 season, he was promoted to Assistant Manager under Martin Ling.
As a commanding centre-half and inspirational captain, Dean twice led Orient out for play-off finals, only to suffer heartbreak at both Wembley and the Millennium Stadium.
One of the other main highlights of his career at Orient was when he became the first defender since Kevin Hales to score ten goals in a season, a feat he achieved in 1998/1999.
He cost Orient boss Tommy Taylor £42,500 after a tribunal settled the fee for his transfer from Hereford United to Orient in June 1997 - and that was three years after Hereford paid £75,000 to Walsall for his services.
In February 2003 he was handed a last shot at playing for a 'big' club when Sheffield Wednesday came in for him, and then in the summer of 2004 he joined Port Vale, making a handful of appearances before hanging up his boots on a 672 game, 72 goal career which spanned almost 16 years.
Now fully qualified to UEFA A Licence standard, Dean is developing well in his new role as a senior coach.

Kevin Nugent - Youth Team Manager
Place and Date of Birth: Edmonton, April 10 1969
KEVIN returned to his roots in the summer of 2007 to take up the role of Youth Team Manager.
The Edmonton-born 38-year-old began his playing career at Brisbane Road and he made in excess of 150 appearances for the O's across two spells.
Nugent also played for Plymouth Argyle, Bristol City, Cardiff City and Swansea City, and it was with the Swans that he moved into coaching.
Kevin was assistant manager to Kenny Jackett and the pair masterminded Swansea's promotion from League Two in 2005.
Kevin, who scored 115 league goals in a career spanning 19 years, has now completed the Uefa Pro Licence qualification and he will be looking to continue the fine tradition of youngsters coming through the ranks at Brisbane Road.
