A GROUP of Year 7 and Year 8 pupils from the Walthamstow School for Girls who are currently halfway through their Playing for Success (PfS) course had a surprise visitor to the Leyton Orient Community Sports Programme (LOCSP) education centre recently in the form of sculptor and artist Kerry Davies.

Kerry visited LOCSP as part of the Waltham Forest 'Fellowship Art Challenge Project' 2008, which continues the link LOCSP has with the festival following a successful day of painting back in the May half term session at Score.

Kerry started off the session by explaining the theme of 'Global Patterns' and how the group would be interpreting this through the patterns on animal faces with pictures she had brought in.

The group were then shown how to bend and manipulate the willow 'withies' into shape and how to bring the structure to life using vibrant coloured cellophane.

"The girls here have been absolutely fantastic," enthused Kerry.

"They have come in having never done anything like this before and have just got stuck in and made some brilliant designs.

"I thought it would be quite simple to look at the patterns on animal faces and the girls have sculpted elephants, monkeys and mice.

"I have been very impressed with the girls and they all seem to have a flair for design and art - even their teacher made a tomcat!"

The sculptures will form part of the exhibition which starts at the William Morris Gallery on July 7th and will be showcasing all types of work from nursery up to sixth form college age.
