O's Host FL Community Cup

Posted on: Tue 25 May 2010

ORIENT will be hoping the first team wreak revenge this weekend after their representative school team was denied the chance to play at Wembley by none other than their Wycombe counterparts!

The six-a-side, tournament, held every year, saw teams representing Football League clubs from the south of England battle it out for the trophy and the chance to play at Wembley Stadium against the winners from the northern tournament before the League One play off final on May 29.

For the second year running, Brisbane Road played host to the tournament, with the surroundings adding not only excitement for the boys and girls who took part, but nerves as well.

Leyton Orient's team, made up of year six pupils attending Winns School in Waltham Forest, had battled through the previous round to line up against teams such as Brighton and Hove Albion, Southend United and Bristol Rovers, whilst wearing Leyton Orient colours.

After comprehensively winning their group and triumphing in their semi final against Bristol Rovers 3-0, Leyton Orient came up against Wycombe Wanderers, who had soundly beaten Exeter City 2-0 in their own semi.

It was a close game, with neither team giving much away until the very end. Oscar Glenister broke and put Wycombe ahead with a well struck shot into the top corner and the game was put out of Orients reach minutes later when Raj Jutla adding to the score, leaving the Orient boys heartbroken.

Tyler, 11, from Winns School said: "Before the tournament we hadn't lost a match this season. It would have been great to play at Wembley but we have enjoyed playing on this pitch and we still have two more cup finals left this season."

Rob Tromans, the football development officer at Leyton Orient Community Sports Programme (LOCSP), who organised the tournament, went on to say: "It was absolutely brilliant and exceeded expectations. Every single kid loved it and this is exactly what we do our jobs for"
