League One Latest: All Change At The Top

Posted on: Mon 21 Sep 2009

LEEDS UNITED are the new leaders in Coca-Cola League One after their crushing 4-1 victory over Gillingham at Elland Road on Saturday.

Former O's loanee Andy Barcham was on target for the Gills, but his goal counted for little as Bradley Johnson (twice), Jonny Howson and Jermaine Beckford all found the net for the home side.

Simon Grayson's side take over from Charlton Athletic at the league's summit after the Addicks saw a two-goal lead go to waste at Norwich City.

The Addicks looked on course for yet another three point haul when Deon Burton and Jonjo Shelvey put them two up before the break, but Wes Hoolahan and Grant Holt scored for Norwich to claim a 2-2 draw.

Bristol Rovers' hugely impressive start to the season continued with a 3-1 win at Brentford. New loan signing Chris Dickson scored twice for the Gas, and Aaron Lescott added a third before the first half was up.

Charlie MacDonald pulled one back for Brentford in the second period, but it was too little, too late for Andy Scott's men.

Fourth-placed MK Dons kept pace with the top three by winning 1-0 at Wycombe Wanderers. Mat Doumbe scored the decisive goal.

Two penalties from Kevin Lisbie gave Colchester United a 2-0 success over Hartlepool United at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

High-flying Huddersfield United suffered a heavy defeat at Millwall, with Chris Hackett, Neil Harris and Steve Morison all on target for the Lions. Jordan Rhodes scored late on for the Terriers but it couldn't prevent them from falling to a 3-1 loss.

Swindon Town had Billy Paynter's 80th minute penalty to thank for rescuing a 1-1 draw at Walsall, whose goal came from Troy Deeney.

Southend United won a thrilling game at Brighton & Hove Albion by the odd goal in five. Twice Nicky Forster cancelled out goals from Lee Barnard and Roy O'Donovan for the Shrimpers, but Francis Laurent had the last word in stoppage time to secure victory for the Essex side.

John Barnes' Tranmere Rovers continue to struggle and they were handed a seventh straight defeat by Exeter City. Adam Stansfield's double put the Grecians into a two-goal lead and Michael Ricketts' second half strike was just a consolation for the Merseysiders.

Pawel Abbott and Keigan Parker scored the goals to give Oldham Athletic a 2-0 win over Carlisle United, while Southampton finally secured their first victory of the season, with two Rickie Lambert spot kicks seeing off Yeovil Town at St Mary's.
