NORWICH CITY became the first team to secure promotion from League One this season when their 1-0 victory at Charlton Athletic on Saturday took them 10 points clear of third placed Millwall with three games to go.

The Canaries, who had lost at Brisbane Road in midweek, bounced back in the best possible way with Michael Nelson's 34th minute goal taking them to victory over Charlton, who are in fifth place.

Leeds United suffered a setback in losing 3-2 at relegation-threatened Gillingham, but none of their promotion rivals could take advantage, as Millwall lost 1-0 at Huddersfield Town on Friday night and Swindon Town only managed a 1-1 draw against mid-table Walsall.

Colchester United's play-off hopes look increasingly remote after a 3-1 loss at Hartlepool United. On loan Roy O'Donovan scored twice for Pools and Colchester are now six points behind sixth placed Huddersfield.

However, Southampton still believe they can gatecrash the top six after Lee Barnard grabbed an injury time winner in their 1-0 victory at Yeovil Town.

Bristol Rovers were held to a 0-0 draw with Brentford, while fellow mid-table dwellers Carlisle United lost 2-1 to Oldham Athletic.

Kevin Betsy's last-gasp winner kept Wycombe Wanderers' survival hopes alive as they won 3-2 at Milton Keynes Dons - their third successive victory.

Southend United's prospects of staying in League One look increasingly bleak after Ashley Barnes' goal gave Brighton & Hove Albion the points at Roots Hall.

Finally, Tranmere Rovers dragged themselves to within two points of the safety line by beating relegation rivals Exeter City 3-1 at Prenton Park. Exeter's James Dunne was sent off in the first half and Tranmere took full advantage by scoring through Craig Curran, Joss Labadie and Gareth Edds.
