IT WAS a drama-drenched final day of the season for many of Orient's League One rivals, although the O's were themselves able to enjoy a comfortable last weekend following the victory over Wycombe Wanderers that secured their League One safety.
That result relegated the Chairboys, who finished the campaign third from bottom and ahead of Southend United and Stockport County, who will also be joining them in League Two.
However, the final relegation spot was still undecided going into the final day and Tranmere Rovers, Exeter City, Hartlepool United and Gillingham all found themselves in danger.
Tranmere saved themselves with a 3-0 win over Stockport County, while Hartlepool's 0-0 draw at Brentford was enough for them.
The outlook seemed bleak for Exeter when they trailed 1-0 to Huddersfield Town early on, but they turned it around to win 2-1 thanks to Ryan Harley's late volley and condemn Gillingham, who lost 3-0 at Wycombe, to the drop.
The relegated quartet will be replaced by League Two champions Notts County, fellow promoted sides AFC Bournemouth and Rochdale, along with one of Morecambe, Rotherham United, Aldershot Town or Dagenham & Redbridge, who are competing in the play-offs.
At the other end of the League One table, Leeds overcame the handicap of Max-Alain Gradel's first half dismissal to beat Bristol Rovers 2-1 and hold on to their automatic promotion slot, joining champions Norwich City in the Championship.
Millwall, Charlton Athletic, Swindon Town and Huddersfield Town are the teams in the play-offs, while Peterborough United, Plymouth Argyle and Sheffield Wednesday were the teams relegated from the second tier.
