Ipswich Town 4 - 1 Leyton Orient
Carling Cup Round One
ORIENT'S interest in the Carling Cup was ended in brutal fashion by Championship side Ipswich Town on Tuesday night.
The O's were second best all over the park and the home side were fully deserving of the crushing victory.
Two goals in as many first half minutes set the tone for the hosts, with Danny Haynes and Tommy Miller finding the net to put the O's firmly on the back foot.
Haynes later added to his own tally, while Alan Lee bagged a fourth as the hosts threatened to run riot.
Adam Boyd's second goal of the season restored some pride for the Londoners, but there was little hiding the fact they had been outclassed on the night.
Orient forced the first corner of the game with four minutes on the clock and it so nearly led to the opening goal. Danny Granville was left all alone to meet JJ Melligan's flag kick, and although his header beat goalkeeper Shane Supple, Alan Quinn was stationed on the line to block.
But Ipswich looked more menacing early on and Haynes ran at Granville in the right hand channel on 12 minutes, before unleashing a stinging effort which the O's left back deflected over the bar.
Six minutes later, Liam Trotter tried his luck, firing over after Lee had knocked Haynes' right wing cross back to the central midfielder.
Haynes was again centrally involved on 20 minutes, making great strides down the right hand side to get involved with the break that gave Ipswich the lead. Haynes gained a yard on Tamika Mkandawire and fired in a hard, low shot that Morris could only touch in at his near post.
Morris would also have been disappointed with the second goal two minutes later, when he decided to punch after Chris Casement's cross bounced up off Brian Saah. The O's stopper didn't get enough distance on the clearance and Miller responded by thumping into the unguarded net.
Orient did manage to stem the Ipswich tide for a time after the double goal burst, although Jon Walters could have extended the lead on 42 when he shot straight at Morris from a good position.
The visitors, for their part, struggled to piece together decent periods of possession and they failed to test Supple before the break.
Ipswich did not have to wait long for a third though, with Haynes striding clear down the left to slip the ball under Morris a minute prior to the interval.
It didn't get any better for Orient at the start of the opening period, as Lee got across his man to meet Quinn's cross with a well-directed header that gave Morris no chance.
Orient's travelling supporters were finally given something to cheer within a minute when Boyd cut the deficit. There didn't appear to be much danger when Stephen Purches knocked a long ball down the line, but Pim Balkestein misjudged his header, allowing Boyd to nip in behind and lob home.
Sean Thornton fired over the bar as Orient searched for an unlikely route back into the game, but Ipswich still searched for more and both Trotter and Haynes tried their luck from distance - the latter forcing Morris to save with his venomous effort.
With the sting well and truly out of the game, both sides went through the motions as the final whistle neared, but Ipswich still had the chance to add to the winning margin near the end.
Morris stood up well, though, to deny sub Kevin Lisbie in a one-one-one situation.
