Colchester United 1 - 0 Leyton Orient
Coca-Cola League One
KEVIN LISBIE'S stoppage time penalty sent Orient to a final day defeat at Colchester United.
The O's looked set to seal a stalemate at the Weston Homes Community Stadium until Luke Ashworth saved David Prutton''s goalbound effort on the line with his hands.
Referee Dean Whitestone was left with no option but to award a penalty and dismiss the Orient youngster.
Defeat was harsh on the O's who, following a dull first half, enjoyed the better of a closely-contested second period.
But, thanks to last week's win over Wycombe, the fact Orient went away from north Essex pointless didn't matter.
After a quiet start to the game, Colchester's Kayode Odejayi had a chance to give his side a 22nd minute lead but, faced by an advancing Jamie Jones, he poked wide after running onto Marc Tierney's ball in the left channel.
Five minutes later U's stopper Ben Williams got caught under the flight of a John Spicer corner, but Sean Thornton could only head over the bar.
Orient were starting to hit their stride, but Colchester looked to strike using the pace of winger Ashley Vincent, who sliced an effort high and wide after being picked out by Odejayi's through ball.
Genuine chances remained scarce, although Jones needed to make an excellent save to prevent Anthony Wordsworth's downward header from finding the net a minute before the break.
A minute after the interval Williams got away with spilling Eric Lichaj's free kick as he came to the edge of the area to collect. The ball dropped to Ryan Jarvis, but his shot was blocked virtually as soon as it left his foot.
Jarvis was involved again on the hour, forcing a good fingertip save from Williams with a rasping drive from the edge of the box.
Three minutes later Lichaj advanced from right back and swapped passes with Adam Chambers before shooting for goal from 20 yards. Williams was fully behind his effort though, and saved comfortably.
The second half was at least providing more incident and Jarvis broke the Colchester offside trap to burst clear down the left flank on 73. His low cross picked out Chambers at the far post, but Paul Reid threw himself in front of the ball to block.
At the other end Phil Ifil's header from Wordsworth's corner was blocked on the line, but just as it looked as though the game would end 0-0 Colchester won a stoppage time penalty.
Ashworth was the guilty party, handling Prutton's shot from point blank range and seeing red for his efforts.
Lisbie stepped up to convert the penalty and have the last word in the last game of the season.
