Leyton Orient 1 - 0 Millwall
Coca-Cola League 1
ANDROS TOWNSEND came off the bench to sink Millwall and give Orient their first win in nine attempts.
The on-loan Spurs winger swung a tight London derby in the home side's favour with a super display as a second half sub.
He had been on the pitch for less than two minutes before firing in the winning goal, and it was a strike of quality to beat Millwall keeper David Forde in the bottom right corner.
Orient's defence held firm to record their first clean sheet of the season and break their home duck at the fifth time of asking.
The only chance in the opening 15 minutes fell to Millwall's Jimmy Abdou, whose weak shot was blocked by Tamika Mkandawire after Steve Morison got around the back to cut the ball back from the by-line.
Millwall keeper Forde made his first save on 22 minutes when the O's broke quickly with Jason Demetriou having acres of space to run into. The winger carried the ball for 50 yards before cutting inside, but his low shot from outside the area lacked power and Forde saved easily.
Five minutes later James Scowcroft had an excellent chance to break the deadlock when Ben Chorley's quickly-taken free kick caught out the Lions' defence and gave the striker a sight of goal, but he dragged the shot wide of the near post and the visitors escaped.
Mkandawire also flicked a Jason Demetriou free kick over the top, but genuine chances were few and far between in a tight opening period.
The O's were forced into an early change in the second half when Demetriou suffered a head injury and his replacement, Townsend, had an instant impact.
He had been on the pitch for barely 90 seconds before arrowing a low shot across Forde and into the bottom corner to give Orient the lead in fine style.
Townsend went close to adding a second on 69 when he unleashed a stinging shot from range that Forde had to acrobatically tip over the crossbar.
With just a single-goal advantage, it was a nervy last quarter of the game for the home side but they held the Lions at bay, standing tall to deal with a number of late set plays and keep hold of their lead until the end.
