Wycombe Wanderers 0 - 1 Leyton Orient
Coca-Cola League 1
SCOTT McGLEISH scored on his return to Wycombe Wanderers as Orient recorded a vital 1-0 victory over the Chairboys at Adams Park on Saturday.
McGleish, who spent two-and-a-half years as a Wycombe player prior to his summer move to the O's, headed the only goal with 14 minutes left to settle the matter.
After struggling to create before the break, Orient came to life in the second period and McGleish's fourth goal of the season was their reward.
Jason Demetriou stung Wycombe stopper Scott Shearer's palms with a fiercely-struck free kick in the fourth minute.
At the other end Ben Chorley gave the ball away to Kevin Betsy with 13 minutes on the clock, and the Wycombe man cut the ball back to the edge of the area, where Stuart Green was waiting to strike and his shot was deflected behind.
Matt Phillips was starting to look dangerous on the left wing and he skipped past Andrew Cave-Brown in the 24th minute before supplying a cross for Matt Harrold, whose header dropped the wrong side of the post.
Another delivery from the left almost paved the way for a Wycombe goal on 39, but Michael Duberry headed Craig Woodman's free kick over the top after Jimmy Smith was penalised for handball.
Seconds later Chris Zebroski wasted a two-on-one break when his shot was deflected to safety after Luke Summerfield was dispossessed by Betsy.
Jamie Jones was called into action just four minutes after the break, changing direction well to claw the ball away after Harrold's header struck Zebroski and threatened to sneak into the corner.
Two minutes later Shearer was smartly off his line to deny Scott McGleish after Andros Townsend's through ball found the striker inside the area.
Andros Townsend then tried his luck from 20 yards but his right footed effort flew over the crossbar and on the hour McGleish got across Luke Oliver to meet Ryan Jarvis' cross, but couldn't divert the ball on target.
The O's were starting to fire and Jarvis found space in the 62nd minute and was picked out by Demetriou, but Shearer was well-positioned to beat the ball away.
Townsend went close again with 19 minutes to go, drilling over the top after running down the left flank and cutting inside.
The O's were pushing hard for the opener and it finally arrived 14 minutes from time when Adrian Patulea, only just on the field as a sub, crossed from the left for McGleish to crash a header beyond Shearer.
Wycombe came desperately close to a leveller five minutes from the end when Jimmy Smith nodded Harrold's goalbound header off the line with Jones beaten.
Harrold had another shot blocked late on as the Chairboys searched for a leveller but it was not forthcoming and Orient were able to celebrate a vital three points.
