Leyton Orient 2 - 1 Brentford
Coca-Cola League One
ORIENT came from behind to secure a London derby victory over Brentford at Brisbane Road on Saturday.
Geraint Williams' men benefited from a helping hand given to them by their visitors, with defender Danny Foster heading into his own net for what turned out to be the decisive goal.
Former Newcastle striker Carl Cort gave Brentford the perfect start when he nodded the Bees in front just four minutes in, and their luck seemed to be in when Nikki Bull saved Scott McGleish's penalty.
But the O's striker levelled before the break before Foster's unfortunate intervention tipped the balance in Orient's favour.
There were just four minutes on the clock when Cort got across Ben Chorley to nod Sam Wood's free kick into the net from close range.
Jimmy Smith drilled off target from the edge of the box and Andros Townsend sent a shot across goal and wide of the far post as Orient looked to respond inside the first 15 minutes.
But the Bees, buoyed by their early goal, were pinging the ball about well and asking questions of the O's in the early stages.
Cort had a chance to double his tally in the 23rd minute, but his shot was directed too close to Glenn Morris and the home side escaped.
Another good break on the half-hour ended with Cleveland Taylor's cross being cleared only as far as Wood, whose volley whistled wide of the near post.
Orient were handed a golden opportunity to get back on level terms on 33 when Ryan Jarvis was upended by Mark Phillips inside the box, but McGleish couldn't take advantage, with Bull diving to his right to beat away his penalty.
The veteran striker atoned for that miss just two minutes later when his well-executed scissor kick found the bottom corner of the net after Tamika Mkandawire headed Jason Demetriou's deep cross back into the middle.
Orient were making much more of an impression now and Charlie Daniels sent a low shot from wide of Bull's post five minutes before the interval.
Ten minutes into the second period Charlie MacDonald sent a shot just over the bar after exchanging passes with Cort inside the area, and moments later Townsend also fired inches over the top after being fed into space by Luke Summerfield.
It was an open start to the second half and Morris had to be smartly across his goal to pluck Taylor's well-struck shot out of the air with 63 minutes on the clock.
Two minutes later Orient edged in front when Townsend, playing on the right hand side in the second period, received a pass from Summerfield and sent over an inviting cross that Brentford defender Foster, in trying to prevent McGleish from reaching, could only power into his own goal.
Foster tried to right his wrong ten minutes from the end when he advanced from right back and sent a powerful shot towards goal, but Morris stuck up a hand to save.
Morris showed a good pair of hands to gather Kevin O'Connor's free kick two minutes later as Orient withstood the late pressure to earn the London derby bragging rights.
