Leyton Orient 5 - 0 Bristol Rovers
Coca-Cola League One
ORIENT turned in a five-star display to sweep Bristol Rovers aside at Brisbane Road on Tuesday night.
The O's were in rampant form as they scored five goals in a home game for the first time since December 2005, maintaining their excellent form at the start of 2010.
Rovers held the hosts to just Stephen Purches' goal before the break, but there was no stopping them in the second period as they added a further four strikes to the tally.
Ryan Jarvis made it 2-0, before Scott McGleish's penalty rebounded off the post and in off Rovers stopper Mikkel Andersen.
Jason Demetriou passed home a fourth and there was even a first goal in English football for January signing Jonathan Téhoué, whose close range finish made it 5-0 in the last minute.
Orient looked to make the early running, and Nicky Adams created the first chance of the evening with 10 minutes on the clock. His far post cross was met by Demetriou, but his volley slammed into the ground and flew over the bar.
Another excellent Adams cross on 24 gave Demetriou a headed chance, but with Carl Regan applying the pressure, the ball flew wide.
A minute later Purches' persistence almost paid off when, with Aaron Lescott trying to shield the ball out for a corner, the O's right back slid in and forced Mikkel Andersen into a save.
And, from the resulting corner, the O's skipper was involved again, sending in a shot from 25 yards that took a nick off a defender, left Andersen wrongfooted and nestled in the bottom corner.
Orient were looking comfortable, and they were so close to doubling their lead four minutes before the interval when Andersen spilled Sean Thornton's low free kick. McGleish reacted quickly to reach the loose ball, but the Rovers stopper bravely blocked his shot before denying Adam Chambers as well.
Right on the half time whistle goalkeeper Andersen, perhaps still shaken by the knocks he took in saving from McGleish and Chambers, was beaten to Demetriou's corner by Tamika Mkandawire, but the O's defender was stretching for the ball and he couldn't keep his header down.
Andersen was more convincing a minute after the break, reacting brilliantly to tip McGleish's header over the top following Demetriou's dangerous left wing cross.
It was a rapid start to the second period for the home side and Demetriou forged another chance on 48, cutting in from the left to feed Adams, who in turn laid the ball off for McGleish to send in a shot which he scuffed wide.
Rovers moved the ball to the other end immediately, and Jamie Jones was called into action for the first time to easily save Jo Kuffour's low shot from outside the box.
Normal service was quickly resumed with the O's notching the second goal they deserved on 51 minutes. Chambers was the goal's creator, making an excellent run down the right to collect Jarvis' pass and return the compliment by crossing low for the striker to take a touch and drill beyond Andersen for his sixth of the season.
Orient should have added a third on the hour when Adams' low cross just evaded McGleish in the middle, but the O's striker won his side the chance to extend their lead when he was barged by Chris Lines in the area as Adams swung over a corner.
McGleish took the spot kick himself and although the ball cannonned off the post, it struck Andersen and rebounded back into the net.
There was no stopping the O's in this mood and they duly made it four with 19 minutes to play when Demetriou ran clear to coolly slide the ball beyond Andersen.
Téhoué was next to get on the act, stretching to knock Thornton's free kick into the net to bag his first goal in O's colours a minute from time.
And to complete a perfect evening, Jones made a stunning full-stretch save to deny Kuffour in stoppage time and set the seal on a thumping victory.
