Charlton Athletic 0 - 1 Leyton Orient
Coca-Cola League One
SCOTT McGLEISH scored on his return to the Valley to give Orient a night to remember against Charlton Athletic.
Former Charlton man McGleish headed home three minutes after the break as the O's ground out a single-goal victory to keep their perfect start to 2010 going.
Orient were excellent throughout in quelling the high-flying Addicks' threat and McGleish's goal was their reward.
Dean Burton had a shot cleared off the line. while Ryan Jarvis hit the post for the O's - but McGleish was the hero on a night the O's contingent will remember for a long time.
McGleish had a chance to score on his return to his old stomping ground when Jason Demetriou's 11th minute corner picked him out, but he mistimed the header and the ball drifted harmlessly over.
Charlton were seeing more of the ball in the opening stages, but Orient were carving out the better chances and, in the 20th minute, Nicky Adams got past Grant Basey and sent a low cross into the box, which was cleared as far as Adam Chambers, whose shot was blocked in the middle.
It sparked a good spell from the visitors and Adams' strong run in from the right ended with a shot which hit the defender at source and looped into keeper Rob Elliot's arms.
With 27 minutes on the clock Charlton fashioned their first real chance when Lloyd Sam beat Charlie Daniels and crossed for David Mooney, whose header flew over the top.
Three minutes later play swung to the other end and Jason Demetriou burst forward and fed Adams, who in turn picked out McGleish for a shot that flew just wide of the mark.
It was an excellent start by the O's, but they nearly fell behind six minutes before the break when Sam tricked his way past Daniels for just the second time in the game, and sent in a shot that took a nick off Tamika Mkandawire and dribbled wide of the goal.
And Orient had a let off in first half stoppage time when Burton beat Jamie Jones to a lofted pass inside the area. Jones did well to hold the Charlton man up, and his eventual shot was blocked en route to goal by Chorley.
Charlton were straight onto the attack at the start of the second period and Sam's excellent run ended with him cutting the ball back to Mooney, whose rising drive needed to be tipped over by Jones.
But three minutes after the restart Orient were in front as the result of a flowing move. Chambers won the ball in midfield, held off Nicky Bailey's challenge and moved the ball right for Adams. He was delayed by Basey, but the ball broke for Sean Thornton, whose teasing cross was met with an unstoppable McGleish header at the far post.
Five minutes later it so nearly got better for the visitors when Jarvis collected a ball in the box, held off his man and sent in a shot as he turned which crashed off the post with Elliot beaten.
Charlton looked to respond through Burton, who took down a long ball but couldn't hit the target with just Jones to beat.
Adams was looking dangerous whenever he went forward and he fashioned another chance for McGleish on 58 with a cross from the right that was volleyed high and wide.
The Addicks should have levelled on 65 when Frazer Richardson got the better of Demetriou and cut the ball back from the right by-line. Mooney looked set to stroke the ball into the net, but he got the wrong direction on his shot and slid wide.
Two minutes later Thornton gave the ball away 30 yards from goal and Jonjo Shelvey fired in a shot from range but Jones was able to gather easily.
The O's were still looking to threaten and sub Jonathan Téhoué shot wide from 25 yards after rolling away from Christian Dailly.
Thornton also struck a free kick just wide of the mark as the clock ticked towards 90, but Orient had already done enough to secure a famous victory.
