Leyton Orient 0 - 2 West Bromwich Albion
Carling Cup Round Two
ORIENT'S interest in the Carling Cup was ended for another season by West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night.
The Premier League side were rarely troubled once Pablo Ibáñez headed them into a first half lead and they were able to comfortably hold off the O's challenge.
Scott McGleish had a golden chance to put them 1-0 up early on and the Londoners were always likely to rue their failure to take it.
Baggies stopper Boaz Myhill was a virtual spectator and Chris Wood wrapped it up at the death with a fierce finish at the near post.
McGleish was presented with a super chance to fire the O's into an eighth minute lead when Jonathan Téhoué's pass ricocheted through to him inside the Albion box. The veteran striker tried to beat Boaz Myhill low to his right, but the visitors' stopper dived down to tip the ball inches wide of the post.
That was to be as close as Orient came in the opening period as the Baggies settled down and comfortably held the hosts at arm's length.
They were restricted to long range efforts in the early stages with Giles Barnes and Steven Reid both testing Jamie Jones from range, although both resulted in simple saves.
Jones was extended fiurther by Luke Moore's stinging 20 yard effort after Charlie Daniels gave the ball away, but the O's stopper was equal to the task, diving to his right to turn the ball around.
However, he was helpless to prevent the Baggies from moving in front on 29 when Spanish international defender Ibáñez rose unchallenged to meet Sam Mantom's free kick with a header that bounced down into the turn and flew into the top right corner.
Simon Cox wasn't far away from doubling the visitors' advantage moments later, controlling a lofted ball inside the box and volleying over the top with his left foot.
Daniels drew a comfortable low stop from Myhill as the half neared its conclusion but Roberto Di Matteo's side were comfortable in their interval advantage.
They remained largely unthreatened at the start of the second period, although McGleish had another opportunity for the O's on 64 minutes when Téhoué's centre from the left picked him out. McGleish had to dive onto the header and couldn't make the contact he wanted, planting the ball wide.
Albion weren't offering much in the way of a goal threat either, although Mantom did have a chance to change that midway through the half when the ball broke to him 20 yards from goal. Fortunately for the hosts, his drilled effort was straight down the throat of Jones.
The Premier League outfit made sure of their place in the second round in stoppage time when sub Wood, a New Zealand international, got clear in the right channel and smashed a low drive past Jones at the near post.
