Nelson - We Defended From Front To Back
ORIENT have been involved in several high-scoring thrillers this season, but one O's star was far happier with Saturday's hard-fought win over Oldham. It's all about clean sheets for keeper Stuart Nelson, after a torrid few weeks. He spoke to leytonorient.com after the game.
Stuart, was that a satisfying result for you?
"It was a hard-working performance, and it's good to get back to winning ways at home. Sometimes games go like that - we dominated the first half-hour and got the goal, but as the gaffer has just said, sometimes you kick on, sometimes it's a case of digging in. This game was all about holding on to that result."
Were we actively trying to keep things tighter, after the goal?
"We still kept attacking but sometimes you don't get the breaks, then by holding on later on you let them back into it. It was a good team performance though, we defended well from front to back and that's how we got a clean sheet. It's not one person who gets the clean sheet it's the whole team. We win as a team and we lose as a team."
Is 1-0 the perfect result for a keeper?
"It's going back to how we started the season, we had four clean sheets in probably six or seven games, and a few more where we've only conceded the odd goal, but now we've got the second worse defensive record in the league. So it was good to get back to a solid game where everyone was throwing their bodies in front of the ball, getting blocks in, defending tight as a team."
Why do you think we've let in so many goals recently? Have we not been switched on enough?
"I think that's what happened [at Doncaster] last week - we were the better team but we deserved to lose. We dominated them on their patch, and at 2-1 we had to just be professional to win the game. But that's what cost us, within a short space of time we found ourselves 4-2 down. It was different here. We've gone a goal up, and although we haven't pushed on, we've contained it and that's good enough for me, I'll take 1-0 every time."
Do you feel back to your best now, after a couple of dodgy games a few weeks back?
"There were a couple of games there - Hartlepool I didn't feel right for the whole game, and Swansea, the third and fourth goals I could have done better with. I still felt I played well in myself, but as a keeper, ultimately if you make a mistake it ends up in the back of the net.
"With it being 5-0 and us not getting a goal, it highlights things. Sometimes you get away with it, your team will bang four in and no-one will worry about the mistake you made at the other end. That's all it was really, I started the season really well, made some good saves, and you've got to take the rough with the smooth."
Is it the sign of a good keeper, how well you bounce back from mistakes?
"I know I'm a good keeper, and one mistake doesn't make you a bad keeper, but you've got to work hard at it. I've gone back to the training ground, worked as hard as I can work to get myself right for Saturday, but if you get two bad games in a row you do start to doubt yourself. You've got to be strong-minded. I know my level, how good I can be, and it's down to me to bounce back to the way I started the season.
"Really, I hit the ground running at this club, then maybe I dropped off in a couple of games, but it's for me to get back to that level. So I'm delighted with a clean sheet here. That's five for the season now."
It's Swindon on Tuesday then - would you rather win 4-2 or a dull 1-0?
"1-0, because it's all-over then, we've scored and done the right things at the back. But at the end of the day I'll take any win, because the goal is to get as far up there as we can this season. The first thing is to get safe, the next is to make the play-offs, and if we can push on for automatic after that then we'll do that. But safety has to be the priority, and we'll get that as quick as we can."
