Thornton Penalty Settles Reserve Duel
Leyton Orient 1 - 0 Queens Park Rangers
Pontin's Holidays Combination Central Division
SEAN THORNTON'S first half penalty was enough for Orient's reserves to record a 1-0 victory over their Queens Park Rangers counterparts on Tuesday afternoon.
The 24-year-old midfielder converted from the spot after Raphael Sylvester had been fouled by goalkeeper Reece Crowther to give Orient all three points.
There was little to set the pulses racing on a damp and cold Brisbane Road aftenoon, but the three-point haul - Orient's second of the season - lifts them to sixth in the table.
Thornton and central midfield partner Solomon Shields did a good job of controlling the play in the first half, and it was the O's who took a 25th minute lead when Wayne Corden slipped a through ball to Sylvester.
The O's striker beat keeper Crowther to the ball and was tripped as he went around him. Thornton confidently dispatched the penalty and neither side went close to adding to the score before the break.
Crowther went off with an injury at half time to be replaced by Chris Goodchild, but he was just as much a spectator as both teams were unable to make headway in the attacking third.
But the O's had earlier grabbed the all-important goal and they will be pleased to have taken maximum points.
Assistant manager Dean Smith said: "It's nice to get back to winning ways and the attitude of the boys was good.
"The first half perrformance was OK, but we didn't pass the ball well enough after half time.
"Sean Thornton and Sam Oji both did well, as did Matthew Hall, who came on for his reserve team debut in the second half."
