Ray Goddard

Posted on: Wed 12 Dec 2007

THE CLUB is saddened to learn of the death of former Orient goalkeeper Ray Goddard, who died at the age of 58 on Tuesday.

Goddard, a member of Orient's 1969/70 Division Three championship winning side, sadly passed away in Spain after suffering a stroke.

Fulham-born Goddard began as an apprentice at Craven Cottage and made the short journey across London to Brisbane Road in March 1967.

He became a regular in the Orient side the following season and went on to enjoy eight wonderful years at the club.

Goddard will be remembered as one of the club's best-ever goalkeepers and he made 278 League appearances during his time with the O's.

After leaving Orient, Goddard joined Millwall, where he spent four years, and later Wimbledon after they won their place in the Football League.

He even scored the winning penalty kick for the Dons in a League Cup shoot-out against the O's at Plough Lane in 1979.

Goddard ended his career with Wealdstone, whom he joined in July 1981.

The club sends their deepest condolences to Ray's family and friends.
