Lallana Double Sinks O's
Leyton Orient 0 - 2 Southampton
Pontin's Holidays Combination Central Division
THE RESERVES' winning run was brought to an abrupt halt by an impressive Southampton side, who could have won by a far greater margin had their finishing been more clinical.
Winger Adam Lallana scored both goals during a first half that the visitors dominated.
They created countless chances and fully deserved the the three points that keep them hot on the heels of Combination leaders Charlton Athletic.
It was Orient who were the first to go close, with Jabo Ibehre heading wide after beating keeper Bartosz Bialkowski to Aiden Palmer's free kick.
But that was not a sign of things to come as Southampton soon found their feet and began to put the O's under pressure.
Glenn Morris had already saved a Mario Licka free kick by the time Lallana finished off a flowing counter involving David McGoldrick and Marek Saganowski in the 14th minute.
It was one-way traffic from there on in and Saganowski missed a great chance to double the advantage on 20, but he shot wide after Sam Oji was dispossessed by Cedric Baseya.
Four minutes later Lallana showed the Polish international how it should be done, controlling Licka's diagonal ball before forcing the ball home off the advancing Morris.
Baseya then had a shot blocked by trialist Simon Megson, while Saganowski crashed a close-range effort against the crossbar as Southampton went for the kill.
But Orient kept the score at 2-0 and used the half-time break as a chance to regroup.
They did improve in the second half - it could hardly have got any worse - but Southampton were still the more likely scorers and Saganowski blazed a shot over after being fed in by McGoldrick on 48.
Oji headed Jack Page's 57th minute corner wide as Orient created a rare chance, but the Saints finished the game strongly and Morris held onto a fierce low shot from Licka after 72 minutes.
Substitute Matthew Paterson hit the post and then knocked the rebound over a vacant net with three minutes left to play, but that miss wasn't to matter as Southampton completed a comfortable victory.
