Charlton Athletic 3 - 1 Leyton Orient
Pontin's Holidays Combination Central Division
TWO goals in the final 11 minutes sent Orient to their fourth successive Combination defeat at Charlton Athletic on Monday evening.
The O's looked set to take a point when Efe Echanomi cancelled out Lloyd Sam's early opener, but Grant Basey's late penalty, along with Ben Godfrey's goal, took the game away from the visitors.
Orient got off to a nightmare start and they found themselves behind with just three minutes on the clock.
Former O's loanee Sam was the man to hit the target, finishing neatly after Scott Wagstaff's reverse ball found him in space inside the penalty area.
The visitors were level within eight minutes though, taking advantage of a free-kick 35 yards from goal.
Sean Thornton teed up JJ Melligan for a shot, and although there was a deflection, the ball fell nicely for Echanomi to control and tuck home from close range.
Triallist goalkeeper Joe Woolley did well to save from Basey after he had picked up a Thornton backpass, but the game soon settled down after this early flurry of activity.
Both goalscorers had to leave the action after taking knocks in the first half hour, and Orient replaced Echanomi with Harry Baker, allowing Raphael Sylvester to become the central striker with Baker and Loick Pires operating off him.
But Charlton came strong towards the end of the half and Rashid Yusseff fired just wide from the edge of the box a minute before the interval.
After a quiet opening to the second period, Woolley had to keep a watchful eye on Basey's long range effort that bounced just in front of him, and the O's stopper did well to field the the ball.
The home side continued to look threatening and, 11 minutes from time, they were given the chance to make it 2-1 when Aswad Thomas' charge forward was halted by an illegal challenge inside the box.
Basey made no mistake from 12 yards, finding the bottom left corner despite Woolley going the right way.
JJ Melligan's left-footed volley dropped just over the crossbar as Orient looked to hit back, but Charlton made sure of the points four minutes from time when Godfrey surged into the box and squeezed the ball under Woolley.
