DEFENDER Brian Saah was in buccaneering form on Saturday, surging forward to start attacks, but it wasn't enough to get Orient back among the points. He spoke to leytonorient.com after the game.
Brian, was that a fair result?
"We deserved something out of it, massively. In the first half we didn't start well but there was nothing in it - they didn't really create any chances but we didn't do anything either. The goal was against the run of play, the ball just dropped to him and he put it in the corner, it was a good finish. The second half was a lot better, we picked up a lot and we were unlucky not to score. Jason hit the post from a cross and we created a few other chances but it just isn't dropping for us at the moment."
We switched from 4-3-3 to 4-4-2 just before they scored - did it throw us a bit?
"No, I don't think it's got much to do with that, it was just a lucky break to the player who was in a bit of space and he's turned and hit it - the shot could have gone anywhere. Simon Dawkins had a shot at the end that looked like it was going in the far corner but the keeper's made a good save, so that's the fine line at the moment. We're not under so much pressure that Cat [Glenn Morris] is making save after save, we're going 1-0 down against the run of play but we're not doing too much wrong. They've only had two or three shots and they've won the game 1-0."
We played some nice football towards the end of the game - why can't we do it a bit earlier?
"That's a good question, and I don't really know the answer to it. The thing is, it might not be happening at the start, but the fact that we've shown we can do it later on there is a positive sign that we've still got the quality in the team to produce instances like that. I think it's only a matter of time until things start clicking. We need to tighten up in certain areas but also create a few chances and get a few more goals."
Do we need a spark now? Something like Jason's cross dropping in - or a surprise result against Leeds on Tuesday?
"As you say, if Jason's cross-shot goes in it's 1-1 and we're in the ascendancy and we might have gone on to win the game. But now it's a case of the lads recovering from this, getting their heads down and looking forward to a big game coming up. It's a game you look forward to, Leeds away, a big crowd there, but we've got to treat it as just another game and try to put some more points on the board."
As for your own form, you looked a different player today, surging forward - was that an instruction from the manager?
"It was just a case that they were playing one up front. Normally there are two players up there and it's hard to get out with the ball, but there was a lot more space here so one of us had to try to make things happen. We were 1-0 down and we had to do what we could, pushing on. I don't mind, but in terms of enjoying it, I'd enjoy it if there was an end product - a pass that leads to a goal. Right now we've lost again so I'm not too happy."
How do you rate your own form this season?
"It's hard to say because there are a lot of games that we've lost, so you can't take too many positives. Regardless of how you've played, you've still lost, and that's what you go home thinking about. My form's been ok, I'm reasonably happy, but I'll be a lot happier when we're winning again."
