Mkandawire - It's A Big Boost

Posted on: Mon 17 Nov 2008

ORIENT defender Tamika Mkandawire says moving out of the relegation zone will provide a big lift to the east Londoners.

The O's hauled themselves above Yeovil and Colchester with their 2-0 victory over rock-bottom Crewe Alexandra on Saturday and Mkandawire played a key role in the success at both ends of the pitch.

He formed part of the defensive unit which kept their third straight clean sheet, while he also popped up with the all-important opening goal ten minutes after the break.

"We were delighted with the result on Saturday," explained the O's defender. "It was a massive game with Crewe being down there as well, so we knew we had to take something from it and we're really pleased it was three points.

"It's a massive boost to get out of the bottom four.  Being in the relegation zone drains your confidence, but we've put some good performances together now and three consecutive wins is the reward.

"As a defender, you've done your job if you keep a clean sheet so three in a row is good."

Mkandawire's strike was likened to the finish of a striker by boss Martin Ling and the former Hereford man was delighted to help his side to victory.

"I don't seem to score many headers," he smiled. "I'm really happy to get on the scoresheet - I don't mind who scores as long as we win - but it was nice to get one on Saturday.

"I'll keep trying to get on the end of things in the box, so hopefully I can get a couple more before the end of the season."
