ORIENT midfielder Jason Demetriou has been called up to the Cyprus squad for the Cypriot FA's 12th International Tournament later this month.

Demetriou, 21, will link up with the Cyprus national team after Saturday's game with Tranmere for the tournament which, as well as the host nation, features Serbia, Ukraine and Slovakia.

Cyprus, coached by former Panathinaikos midfielder Angelos Anastasiadis, are due to face Serbia on Tuesday February 10, with Ukraine and Slovakia meeting on the same day.

The final and third-place matches take place 24 hours later, with both of Cyprus' games due to be held in Nicosia.

Cyprus are currently bottom of their 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying group, but they were only beaten by a last minute goal by Italy last September, while the Republic of Ireland forced a narrow 1-0 victory over them in Dublin the following month.

Demetriou, who qualifies for Cyprus through his father, is the first English-based player to be called up to the Cypriot national team.

He said: "It's a massive honour to receive this call-up and I'm really looking forward to it.

"It's a big opportunity for me and it will be great to test myself on the international stage - hopefully I can be involved when the World Cup qualifying campaign starts again.

"England was always going to be a big ask, but this was always a second option and I'll be proud to represent Cyprus through my dad's side of the family."

On loan defender Jordan Spence will also be on international duty that week, having received a call-up to the England U19 squad for their February 10 friendly against Spain.
