WAYNE GRAY played his first 45 minutes since suffering a serious knee injury last August as Orient's reserves beat Southend United on Wednesday afternoon.
Gray put in a promising performance before going off at half-time in a pre-planned move as his comeback continues.
Harry Baker and Ryan Jarvis scored the second half goals to give the O's their second consecutive Combination victory.
Shrimpers keeper Ian Joyce was the busier stopper before the break, saving shots from Gray and Wayne Andrews in quick succession as the game burst into life on the quarter-hour.
Gray's power was in evidence towards the end of the opening period when he held off Taylor Sinfield to reach Jarvis' though ball, but Joyce was quickly on top of the O's striker to snuff out the danger.
Former O's loanee Lee Barnard almost gave the visitors the lead on the stroke of half time, lofting just over after an error from the otherwise impressive Brian Saah.
Southend's Rhys Henry hit the post with the score at 0-0 after the interval, but Orient took over again and Baker fired them into a 67th minute with a searing strike from 25 yards.
Danny Granville hit the bar from a free kick shortly afterwards, while Glenn Morris' handling stood up to fierce shots from Damian Scannell and Edward Upson.
Jarvis made the points save three minutes from the end when he got on to Daryl Sydes' pass to dink over Joyce from a tight angle.
