JIMMY SMITH could not have asked for a better start to life as a full-time O's player as his stunning second half strike gave Geraint Williams' side a 2-1 opening day victory at Bristol Rovers.
The former Chelsea player, 22, who signed a two-year contract in E10 this summer following a successful loan spell from the Barclays Premier League side, sent a 20-yard volley into the top corner of the Rovers net to secure Orient's third successive first day win.
It was Smith's first goal in O's colours and he hopes the strike will lead to many more from his central midfield position.
"We couldn't have asked for a better start," said Smith. "We came here with the attitude of going for the three points and we've got that so we're delighted.
"We were very organised throughout. The back four did very well - they were nice and strong - the midfield four were solid and the front two worked really hard so it was a real team effort, with Jonesy doing well in goal too.
"It was an excellent first half, we got the goal and were unlucky to only be drawing 1-1 at half time, but I think we deserved the win overall.
"I was pleased to get on the scoresheet because it's something I want to bring into my game this year as an attacking midfielder.
"It sat up nicely for me so I hit it and luckily enough it went into the top corner, but it's not about me - we got three points and it's great for the team."
Orient now travel to Colchester United for a Carling Cup tie and Smith is keen to build on the momentum gained from Saturday's victory.
He added: "Winning on the first day is always a major boost, especially away from home, and now we can go to Colchester looking to build on this.
"The gaffer wants us to go into every game with a winning mentality. I think we showed that on Saturday and we'll take that into Tuesday as well."
