Smith - They Were Three Great Strikes

Posted on: Thu 03 Dec 2009

ORIENT'S 3-1 victory over Gillingham on Tuesday included three strikes of the highest quality.

Jimmy Smith's 49th minute goal set the seal on the O's most emphatic victory of the campaign and the midfielder felt the three-point haul was fully deserved.

Smith, who signed for the Brisbane Road club in the summer from Chelsea, cut inside his man to curl home with his left foot and he was pleased with his side's attacking potency.

He said: "The strikes for the goals from Jarv, Sean and myself were all great and I think it was a good performance that deserved the three points.

"The manager wanted us to get in their faces early and also to get the ball down and play.

"I think we did that. We created a lot of chances too and could have scored a few more."

Smith's goal was his second of the campaign and he is hoping to notch many more before the season is out.

He continued: "I was happy to get on the scoresheet, and it was with my weaker foot as well!

"I've been disappointed that I haven't scored more this season. My last one was on the first day of the season, so hopefully this one can spark off a good run.

"But the main thing is the three points and we want to go to Swindon at the weekend and get the same result."

The run-up to the game was disrupted by major traffic problems in east London, meaning Gillingham's kit didn't arrive and they were forced to play in Orient's black away strip.

A number of their players didn't get to Brisbane Road until close to kick-off, but Smith said it was the same for both sides and he had little sympathy for the visitors.

He added: "Both teams were struggling to get to the ground, so the preparations weren't as smooth as normal.

"I only live 10 minutes away and it took me an hour to get in, but the manager told us to forget about that and prepare well.

"We did that and it showed on the pitch.

"I don't think they can use their players getting here late as an excuse as it was the same for some of us.

"We both knew what was happening, but we went out there and wanted it more on the day."
