Pires - Playing Both Positions Is Beneficial

Posted on: Thu 17 Dec 2009

LOICK PIRES is hoping his versatility can help him force his way into the first team picture at Brisbane Road.

O's fans will be used to seeing Pires play on the left wing from his fleeting first team opportunities to date, but observers of the reserve team will be able to testify to his talents as a striker.

He has notched six goals in seven second string starts this term and the 20-year-old forward to glad to have another string to his bow.

He said: "Long term, with my attributes I think I'll end up playing up front, but I do believe I can play both positions equally well.

"Playing left midfield has helped me learn how to defend better and how to be more of a team player.

"It's beneficial being able to play in two positions and I enjoy both equally - wherever I'm told to play I'm happy.

Pires' goalscoring form has helped the reserves embark on a five-match unbeaten run and he is well aware of the benefits that regular football brings.

"Reserve team football is very important for us because it's the only regular football that some players get," he continued.

"Some of us get on for the last part of matches for the first team, but you need fitness and match sharpness and playing for the reserves helps with that.

"Whatever level you're playing at you want to win games, and Nuge and the gaffer say from the first team to the reserves and youth team you need to have that winning mentality.

"So to be playing in a side that's doing well now, albeit at reserve level, is very pleasing and can only do wonders for your confidence."

Pires has made six appearances in Geraint Williams' side this term and he wants to add to that tally at Walsall this Saturday.

He continued: "I'm hoping to be involved. All I can do is play football and do well for my teammates and myself.

"Hopefully I will be pushing for a place on the bench on Saturday and we'll be looking to get back on track after last week."
