Orient Gold: Classic JPT

Posted on: Tue 31 Aug 2010

THE countdown to Wednesday's game against Brighton & Hove Albion starts here.

Before every fixture, leytonorient.com will go down memory lane to highlight some classic encounters from the past - and this week the spotlight falls on the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Russell Slade's men begin their Johnstone's Paint Trophy campaign with that trip to the Withdean, and we begin the countdown with last season's meeting between the clubs.

Russell Slade was the opposing manager on this occasion as he brought his Brighton team to east London for a Johnstone's Paint Trophy second round clash.

The O's came into this fixture on the back of two wins from three League 1 fixtures, while Slade made a number of changes to his Seagulls team for the E10 meeting.

After an even and entertaining opening 45 minutes, Orient began to take over near the end and Adrian Patulea and Andros Townsend both went close.

Patulea then hit the crossbar with a close range header and it looked as though the game was heading to penalties, but the Romanian made up for his miss by firing home in the final minute.

Dean Cox, then playing for Brighton, curled just over as the visitors looked for a response, but Orient held firm to book their place in the area quarter finals.

The Londoners' run came to an end at the next stage, as Hereford United progressed on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Brisbane Road.

Leyton Orient 3 - 2 Peterborough United, October 23 2002

Orient welcomed Peterborough United to Brisbane Road for this first round tie and triumphed by a thrilling 3-2 scoreline.

All five goals game within the opening 32 minutes of the game, with Orient always holding a lead after going ahead in the 11th minute.

Debutant Izzy Iriekpen, on loan from West Ham United, opened the scoring and Donny Barnard soon made it two.

Andy Clarke fired past Glenn Morris to cut the deficit on 29, but Matt Lockwood responded by blasting a third O's goal just two minutes later.

Clarke bagged his second straight after the restart to keep Peterborough in it, but Orient held off their challenge to win the tie in front of a 953 attendance.

AFC Bournemouth ended their cup run at the second round stage.

Leyton Orient 2 - 1 Shrewsbury Town, January 31 1995

Orient's best run in this competition came in the 1994/95 season, when they made it to the southern area final before losing over two legs to Birmingham City.

They set up that meeting with the Blues by seeing off Shrewsbury Town at the area semi-final stage, thanks to a 2-1 Brisbane Road victory.

2,913 were in attendance as Mark Warren and Shaun Brooks found the net for the hosts.

They had already beaten Fulham and Bristol Rovers in the run, but Birmingham proved just too strong to crush the O's Wembley dreams, winning 4-2 on aggregate.
