Slade - We Fell Into Their Traps

Posted on: Sat 04 Sep 2010

ORIENT manager Russell Slade conceded that his side got exactly what they deserved from Saturday's derby duel at Dagenham & Redbridge - nothing.

The O's saw their two-match winning run come to an abrupt end as two Romain Vincelot goals sent them crashing to a 2-0 defeat at Victoria Road.

Slade was disappointed with his team's performance and says they need to improve.

"It wasn't a good performance," he said. "As pleased as I was with the last two games, I was disappointed with today's - both in terms of result and performance.

"I have to say that I thought the better team won today, even though we did create chances and had what I thought was a very strong penalty appeal turned down."

That appeal came when Dagenham's Scott Doe blocked Adam Chambers' fierce shot with his arms and Slade was baffled that a spot kick wasn't given, denying the Londoners a possible route back into the game with half an hour to play.

The O's boss continued: "He nearly caught it - it was a great save. I'm not sure of the ruling now but I always used to think if you've got your hands by your side then it's not a penalty, but his arms were right outstretched.

"It's a great block because it could have gone in, but he's handled it."

Slade refused to use that moment as an excuse though, and he was left to reflect on a disappointing display from his team.

"We didn't come to terms with them at the start of the game," he explained. "We didn't get the ball down and we didn't get our passing going.

"We allowed them to dominate and fell into their traps in many ways.

"There were pockets of play towards the end of the first half and after half time where we tried to get it down and play a little bit more.

"But we had a goal against us in the first eight minutes, and then another one inside the first five minutes of the second half, and that shot us in the foot.

"We're better than that. We didn't show it, but there'll be another day and we'll dust ourselves down.

"Our pride is hurt at the minute but we need to bounce back."
