THERE was first round disappointment for the youth team as they crashed out of the Youth Alliance Cup in the opening round with a penalty shoot-out defeat at Southend.

Neither side had been able to make a breakthrough over the 120 minutes of action, and when it came to spot-kicks, only Jason Demetriou and Aidan Palmer were able to convert from the spot.

Although goalkeeper Paul Jones, who came on especially for the shoot-out, was able to save one Shrimpers effort, it was not enough and the Essex side triumphed 4-2.

"We created enough chances to have won four games but I got the feeling we could have been there for four days and not scored, coach Alex Inglethorpe said.

"It was one of those days - Nuno Gourgel went close with a header, Scott Wallis had a one-on-one and Aidan Palmer hit the bar - we just couldn't score.

"We lost Daniel Glozier early on and were already light on players but that's not an excuse.

"On the plus side, our trialist goalkeeper Chris Dunn did very well and we'll be keeping him around us for a bit longer. He was recommended by Spurs and is a bright prospect."

Orient also fielded former Watford youth teamer Liam Phelan on trial as he partnered Joe O'Cearuill at centre-back.

Orient: Chris Dunn; Greg Tiffin, Joe O'Cearuill, Liam Phelan, Daniel Glozier; Jason Demetriou, Bryan Glover, Tom Ziepe, Aidan Palmer; Nuno Gourgel, Scott Wallis.
Subs: Prince Toku for Glozier (30), Tommy Laxton for Gourgel (110), Paul Jones for Dunn (118).
