Pre-Season Friendlies: The Lowdown
ORIENT face six pre-season friendlies as they prepare for the 2008/09 season and with opposition ranging from the likes of Unibond Premier League outfit Boston United to Barclays Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, the east Londoners will take on opposition from both ends of the football spectrum.
It all gets underway on Wednesday July 16 when Orient take on Belgian side KFCO Wilrijk and leytonorient.com is on hand to run the rule over all the teams we will be facing.
KFCO Wilrijk v Leyton Orient
Wednesday July 16, kick-off 7.30pm (CET)
Orient begin their summer campaign with a trip to Antwerp to take on KFCO Wilrijk - the team of former O's star Wim Walschaerts.
Wilrijk enjoyed a successful 2007/08 season, winning promotion from the Antwerp provincial leagues to the fourth tier of Belgian football.
They play at the Universiteitsplein ground in the Wilrijk district of the city and were formed in 1921, merging with another local outfit, Olympia Wilrijk in 1993.
If you are not making your way over to Belgium, the only way to keep up to date with the tour is with Orient World. Click here for info on how to sign up.
Result: KFCO Wilrijk 1 - 4 Leyton Orient. Match report here.
Boston United v Leyton Orient
Saturday July 19, kick-off 3pm
The O's first friendly on English soil involves another strong Brisbane Road connection, as Boston United are managed by former Orient boss Tommy Taylor.
The Pilgrims were a Football League club just two years ago, but following last year's double relegation to Blue Square North, they were dealt a further blow this summer when they were demoted to the Unibond Premeir League as they were still in administration.
They will be hoping to bounce back this term, while Orient travel to Lincolnshire looking to continue a successful record at the Staffsmart Stadium - they have only lost once in five league and cup games there.
Result: Boston United 0 - 0 Leyton Orient. Match report here
Dagenham & Redbridge v Leyton Orient
Wednesday July 23, kick-off 7.45pm
Local rivals Dagenham & Redbridge host Orient the following Wednesday as the Daggers celebrate the preservation of their hard-won Football League status.
The Daggers struggled against relegation back to the Blue Square Premier for much of their debut League Two season, but two wins in their final two games meant they eventually finished a comfortable seven points clear of danger.
John Still's side defeated Orient in a Johnstone's Paint Trophy second round tie at Brisbane Road in October, so Orient will want to set the record straight in this meeting at Victoria Road.
Result: Dag & Red 1 - 4 Leyton Orient. Match report here.
Aldershot Town v Leyton Orient
Saturday July 26, kick-off 3pm
The second League Two club to take on Orient this summer is Aldershot Town.
Aldershot romped to the Blue Square Premier title last season, breaking the 100-point barrier to finish on 101, 15 clear of nearest challengers Torquay United.
Managed by Gary Waddock, Aldershot are well fancied by the bookies to comfortably retain their Football League status - and they will be keen to show Orient they are up to the task at the Recreation Ground.
Result: Aldershot 0 - 1 Leyton Orient. Match report here.
Leyton Orient v Tottenham Hotspur
Wednesday July 30, kick-off 7.45pm
Orient's prestige friendly of the summer sees them take on Barclays Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur at Brisbane Road.
It is the second successive season that Orient have welcomed the League Cup winners to Brisbane Road and another sell-out crowd is expected.
Last year, Tottenham unleashed the full extent of their striking prowess with Robbie Keane, Dimitar Berbatov, Darren Bent and Jermain Defoe all playing in a 4-2 Spurs victory, and manager Juande Ramos is sure to bring another strong team to east London as Tottenham get ready for another top flight campaign.
Tickets for this game are now on sale, click here for more information.
Stevenage Borough v Leyton Orient
Saturday August 2, kick-off 3pm
The final friendly fixture before the real action gets underway sees Orient travel to Blue Square Premier side Stevenage Borough.
Stevenage narrowly missed out on their divisional play-offs last term and will be keen to make up for that campaign by challenging for a long-awaited stab at the Football League.
Former O's midfielder Daryl McMahon is a current Stevenage player and they are sure to provide the Brisbane Road side with a strong test seven days before the opening day clash against Hereford United.
Leyton Orient XI matches
A Leyton Orient XI will also contest matches at Ryman Premier side AFC Hornchurch on Thursday July 31 and Brentwood Town, of the Ryman League Division One North, on Tuesday August 5.
