Somme 2008 Update
Steve Jenkins writes...
WHENEVER the Christmas Carol Silent Night is heard being sung, I am sure many of us would think of the Christmas Truce of December 1914. This was an unique event when British and German troops fraternised and exchanged gifts in 'No Man's Land' during the first Christmas of the Great War. There are even well documented reports of an unofficial international football match taking place between the two sides!
The O's proud history of service in the First World War is now well documented and the interest in the Club's major contribution to the Footballers' Battalion led to requests for a trip to the Somme battlefields and Orient war graves during the summer of 2008.
Steve Jenkins, in conjunction with the Les Bailey of the Royal British Legion has organised such a trip and the demand for places has once again proved to be high, this is great news and just as many predicted when it was decided to organise a return visit following the succesful inaugral visit in 2006. Please note however, whilst deposits are still being accepted, there is now only a limited number of places available and it is envisaged that we shall stop taking further bookings early in the New Year.
Northern France 12/13 July 2008
