Gillingham U18 1 - 4 Leyton Orient U18
Football League Youth Alliance SE Conference
ORIENT'S youth team made the perfect start to the 2010/11 season by defeating Gillingham 4-1 on Saturday.
Andy Edwards' side were in scintillating form in front of goal and once they had gone in front with just 10 minutes on the clock, Gillingham were unable to get a look in.
Bobby Scott was the O's man who got the ball rolling, finding the top left hand corner with an excellent free kick.
The visitors continued to look threatening as they pressed for a second and it duly arrived before the break, with Scott this time turning provider.
His right wing cross picked out Moses Odubajo at the far post, who rifled into the roof of the net.
O's stopper Tom Lovelock was rarely troubled before the break, although he did make a top class save to keep Orient's lead at two at the start of the second period.
After surviving that spell of pressure, Orient built on their lead when first year scholar Billy Lobjoit opened his account for the season.
The Londoners were in rampant form and they added a fourth from a well-rehearsed set play routine, with Michael Richardson and Odubajo combining to cross for Greg Knock to score with an excellent header.
Gillingham pulled one back from the spot late on to deny Orient an opening day clean sheet, but youth team manager Edwards was delighted with the result.
He said: "It was an excellent opening day performance following a productive pre-season, and we'll be looking to maintain this level of performance."
