ORIENT’S players reported back for pre-season training this week as their preparations for the new campaign begin.
Russell Slade’s squad were put through their paces at the Score Centre in Leyton on Thursday morning as they were subjected to the dreaded bleep test before returning to their Chigwell training base for an afternoon session.
It provided new signing Michael Symes with his first chance to meet his new teammates and the former Bournemouth striker is looking forward to the hard work ahead.
“It was the first real day of pre-season today,” he said. “We did the bleep test and that’ll probably be one of the hardest things we do over the pre-season.
“The whole point of it at this time of year is getting your fitness levels back up, so you’re ready to go when the first game comes around.
“We all like getting the footballs out, but you know that you have to do the groundwork, getting the runs in too.”
Symes, who also played for Everton, Bradford and Accrington earlier in his career, says there is more to his game than meets the eye too.
“People just expect me to be a target man because I’m tall,” he added.
“But I like to drop deep, pick the ball up and turn. I like to create goals as well as trying to score them.”
