AFFY OBAFEMI’S double got Orient’s youth team off to the perfect start as they defeated Luton Town 2-0 in their opening Football League Youth Alliance match of the season.
Obafemi netted twice inside the first 25 minutes as Orient came flying out of the traps, and although they couldn’t add to their margin of victory over the final two-thirds of the contest, youth team boss Andy Edwards was delighted with the way they forced the issue from the off.
He told E10: “It was an excellent first 25 minutes, although we need to learn how to fully take advantage when we’re on top.
“It’s important to guard against complacency in your play, but it was an excellent performance in the first game of the season and it bodes well for the campaign ahead.”
Luton had no answer to the O’s power in the opening stages and it came as no surprise when Obafemi, last season’s top scorer for the youth team, got his goal rush up and running not long after the start.
His goal was laid on by George Wickings, who won the ball well in midfield, and Harrison Georgiou, whose pass found Obafemi in a dangerous position, and he was able to drive in by the near post.
It was soon 2-0 thanks to Obafemi again as the second year scholar slotted home with excellent conviction to put the O’s in a strong position.
At that stage it looked as though Orient could go on to win by a huge margin, but the east Londoners became a little lackadaisical in their play and Luton were able to hold them at bay.
The away side had their best spell in the second half, but Sean Grace made a good goalline clearance to preserve Orient’s clean sheet and ensure they would get off to a winning start.
