Leyton Orient 0 – 1 Stevenage

npower League 1

LUCAS AKINS’ 23rd minute strike sent Orient to a second straight League defeat at the start of the 2012/13 season.

Akins’ first half goal was enough to give Stevenage the points against a lacklustre O’s side.

Creative play was thin on the ground for the O’s, whose trend of making slow starts is continuing for a third season.

It wasn’t until the 22nd minute that the first shot on target materialised, and then it was a comfortable save for Chris Day as Gary Sawyer’s free kick lacked the required power to really test him.

But a minute later the visitors jumped into the lead when a Luke Freeman free kick from the right channel bounced around in the O’s box and Akins swept a low left footed shot into Jamie Jones’ net.

Michael Symes floated a header wide from Lloyd James’ delivery on 31 as Orient looked to respond, but Stevenage were comfortable in their lead as Orient struggled to work the ball into threatening areas.

The second half began equally poorly for the O’s, who almost fell two behind 11 minutes after the restart when Anthony Grant fizzed a 20-yard shot just wide of the far post.

Six minutes later Boro keeper Chris Day had to make his first save, diving down well to his left to deny Symes after David Mooney laid on the chance just outside the area.

Orient turned to youngsters Moses Odubajo and Affy Obafemi from the bench in a bid to salvage something from the game and they did have more urgency in their play as the contest drew to a close.

Nathan Clarke sent a header inches past the post from a Dean Cox corner but that was as close as the home side came as Stevenage claimed the points.
