REACTION: 'It Was A Penalty'

NEW O’s midfielder Martin Rowlands felt referee Phillip Gibbs made a huge mistake in not awarding him an early penalty at Crawley Town on Saturday.

Rowlands went over in the box just two minutes into the Broadfield Stadium clash, leaving the home support holding their breath.

But the official saw Rowlands’ tumble as a dive and handed the Irishman a yellow card – a decision the ex-QPR player didn’t agree with.

“If you ask your man there [the Crawley defender], he’s caught my foot,” he insisted.

“The referee’s thought I’ve gone down and straight away I’ve gone to their player and he’s said ‘yeah, I caught you.’

“I spoke to the ref at half time and he said if I don’t give the penalty I have to book you.

“In my opinion he’s caught my foot, but they are the kind of things that don’t go for you [at times like this].

“I’m sure with time and the way we defended today, it’ll go right for us.”

Rowlands linked up with the east Londoners last week on a short-term deal and is looking forward to the chance of showing what he can do in E10.

“It’s good to get back playing and be part of a side again,” he said. “I’m enjoying it here and I’ve been training for about three weeks and now my match fitness needs to get up to speed as well.

“It was good to get 80 minutes on Saturday, it was just a shame about the result. I’m sure that with games the fitness will come and the results will most definitely come.”
