SECOND year scholars De’Reece Vanderhyde and Sean Grace gained valuable experience of senior men’s football at the weekend, both playing the 90 minutes as Harlow Town earned a 0-0 draw at local rivals Brentwood Town in the preliminary round of the FA Trophy.
The defensive pair both turned out for Harlow on a work experience basis, which allows them to play for the first team of the loan club whilst still turning out for the youth team at the O’s.
And with the youth team without a game last weekend, it provided the 17-year-olds with the perfect opportunity to make their Hawks debuts.
They may even have been celebrating a victory had Piers Wixon buried an early penalty, but he missed and Harlow keeper Bertrand Bossu had to make a couple of decent saves after the break.
Vanderhyde and Grace contributed well to the Hawks’ clean sheet and the Essex club will now host Brentwood in the replay tonight.
Another player with O’s connections, Joe O’Donoghue, also debuted for Harlow on Saturday. O’Donoghue spent the last two years on a scholarship in E10 but was released in the summer.
