PREVIEW: Doncaster History

WHEN it comes to picking out significant matches against Doncaster Rovers in Orient’s history, it’s hard to look beyond the Londoners’ 8-0 victory over the Yorkshire club in December 1997.

The O’s eight-goal triumph represents their biggest ever victory, level with 8-0 wins over Rochdale, Colchester and Crystal Palace.

Doncaster were on their way to relegation out of the Football League when they visited the O’s that cold December afternoon, but the Brisbane Road club were in no mood for mercy.

Remarkably, seven of Orient’s eight goals came within a 24-minute spell either side of the break as they built on Carl Griffiths’ 20th minute opener in some style.

The second goal didn’t arrive until the 40th minute, but once Alex Inglethorpe struck, the floodgates opened with further goals from Dean Smith and Tony Richards before the interval.

The goals kept on coming in the second period and after Griffiths completed his hat trick by the 55th minute, Richards and Joe Baker scored to make it eight.

26 minutes remained on the clock, but Orient couldn’t add to their tally as their record win remained at 8-0.

The O’s have also had to deal with a couple of heavy defeats to Rovers in their time, with Doncaster enjoying a 6-1 success at Belle Vue back in the 1956/57 season.

They handed out a more recent beating in the 2003/04 campaign, as one-time O’s loanee Leo Fortune-West notched a hat trick in the first 18 minutes of the game on the way to a 5-0 Donny win at Belle Vue.

Orient enjoy a winning record over Saturday’s visits in all-time meetings though, having chalked up 13 victories to Doncaster’s eight. Six of the 27 past matches have ended in draws.

Tickets for Saturday’s game start at £21 for adults in advance, while North Stand tickets for under-11s are free of charge if booked in advance. Go to to buy now.
