RUSSELL SLADE described Dean Cox’s 60-yard goal as a magical moment after his side recorded a 2-1 win at Walsall on Tuesday night.

Cox scored from inside his own half to double Orient’s lead before the break after Lee Cook had put them in front with a rasping drive of his own.

It was a stunning way for Cox to open his account for the season and manager Slade hailed the goal as a piece of great skill.

“It was magical goal,” he said. “He was inside our half and they’ll be playing that on Netbusters.

“It was a quality goal, great finish, great vision and I didn’t think we were going to beat the keeper again because he was having an outstanding game.

“But he couldn’t keep that one out. It was a wonderful goal.

“Lee Cook took his goal well too, he’s a good player isn’t he? In those sort of situations you expect him to hit the target and that’s exactly what he did.”

Orient fully merited their interval advantage after giving an impressive first half performance, but had to fight off a strong Walsall response before prevailing 2-1 in the end.

Slade felt that the first half showing meant his team were deserving of the points at the 90 minute mark.

“It’s a happy changing room right now and deservedly so,” he added. “We worked hard and tactically we were bang on the money in terms of how we set our side up.

“We were a constant threat in the first half and the only disappointing thing at half time was that we were only 2-0 up because we had a couple of really good chances to make it three or four.

“We knew they’d come out strongly in the second period. They were going to have their 15-20 minutes, but we constantly kept giving the ball away.

“They got a goal back from a penalty so I reverted to 4-4-2 to try and take the pressure off by getting the ball to stick up front.

“It still didn’t stick as I wanted it to, but fair play to Walsall they put us under pressure, although there weren’t too many saves that my goalkeeper had to make that weren’t generally fairly simple to pick up.

“They had the one opportunity where it ricocheted off the post, but there was a blatant handball [in the build up] and the play should have been stopped before that.

“On reflection of the 90 minutes I thought we deserved it because we were excellent in the first half.”
