Leyton Orient 0 – 1 Coventry City
npower League 1
ORIENT were again left to rue a lack of firepower as they fell to a 1-0 defeat against Coventry City on Saturday afternoon.
David McGoldrick scored the only goal of the game with seven minutes on the clock, pouncing on a Ryan Allsop error to notch the winner.
The O’s had their chances, particularly before the break, but couldn’t trouble the scorers as their familar problems surfaced again.
McGoldrick’s goal wasn’t the start the O’s wanted, especially as it came as the result of an uncharacteristic error from Allsop.
The home keeper failed to hold a shot from Carl Baker, and McGoldrick was ready and waiting to pick up the loose ball and knock home.
Orient looked to respond and Dean Cox had a good chance to level, but blazed way over after David Mooney’s low cross picked him out 12 yards from goal.
Coventry’s best chances were coming as a result of O’s mistakes and McGoldrick wasted a great opportunity to double his and Coventry’s tally when he picked Ben Chorley’s pocket and placed his shot wide with just Allsop to beat.
At the other end Mooney should really have levelled when the ball dropped to him six yards out after Coventry keeper Joe Murphy clawed away a Scott Wagstaff header.
The net looked set to bulge, but Mooney sliced his shot and the ball flew over the top.
Right on half time Gary McSheffrey drew a good save from Allsop after bursting clear from Chorley in the left channel and 1-0 was how it remained at the break.
The O’s were looking to force the issue in the first half, but struggled to make the same impact at the start of the second as Coventry began to look comfortable.
Lee Cook and Michael Symes came on off the bench as the O’s kept up their hunt for a goal.
Allsop was untroubled at the other end, but the same could be set of Murphy for Coventry.
However, the O’s were so close to a leveller right at the death when Mooney pulled down a ball from out of the sky and prodded goalwards.
Murphy was beaten, but the ball rolled agonisingly wide of the post as Orient drew a blank for the third game in a row.
