SLADE: 'We Wore Them Down'

THEY may have left it late, but O’s boss Russell Slade was delighted to make it through to the second round of the FA Cup with Budweiser at the first time of asking against Gloucester City.

The Tigers, of Blue Square Bet North, looked set to take the Londoners to a replay when the clock ticked over to 87 minutes with the scoresheet still blank, but a quickfire double from the O’s through David Mooney and Dean Cox put paid to their hopes.

“It’s all about getting through in the FA Cup,” Slade said. “We know how difficult it can be from our escapades against Droylsden two years back.

“In the end we got the goals. We wanted them a little earlier – we probably had three really good chances to get goals, but to be fair their goalkeeper’s pulled off two fantastic saves.

“Credit to Gloucester, I thought they gave every last ounce. They threw everything at the game, but we wore them down in the end, we got on top and eventually we got the goals.”

Mooney’s header three minutes from time was his first of the season and Slade felt it was just reward for his recent performances.

He added: “I was delighted that Moons got his reward in the end for all the hard work he’s put in, in the recent games.

“It was a super cross from Lloydy and he finished it well. Coxy too, he hadn’t scored for a while, since Walsall, so he’ll be pleased.

“I was also pleased to get it done in the 90 minutes, that’s for sure, because we didn’t want a fixture pile-up.”
