ORIENT have moved into the loan market on deadline day to bring Fulham youngster Alex Smith to Brisbane Road on a temporary deal.
The 21-year-old left footer can play in defence or midfield and has made one Premier League appearance for the Cottagers this season.
He sat on their bench for last Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to Sunderland and now heads to E10 for a loan that will run until January 2.
O’s boss Russell Slade said: “I’m delighted to bring Alex to the club on loan.
“He’s a player that we as a staff have watched on numerous occasions for Fulham’s U21 side and he has always impressed.
“Alex is a versatile player and will add good options to our squad.”
Smith has been with the Cottagers for 11 seasons, progressing from the youth ranks to the senior squad.
He made his debut this season, coming on a substitute in their 3-0 home win over West Bromwich Albion.
Fulham have given Smith permission to play in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, but not the FA Cup, and he will sign in time to be involved in Saturday’s npower League 1 game against Preston, subject to Premier League and Football League clearance.
He will wear the number 27 shirt during his time at the club.
