SLADE: 'You Want A Full Squad'

RUSSELL SLADE was pleased to see his fringe players pose some selection dilemmas with their performances in Wednesday’s 3-0 win at Northampton Town.

Slade made six changes for the trip to the Sixfields Stadium and will now have to select a team to take on Bury as the O’s go for an eighth straight win.

He told “We were very pleased with Wednesday, we made changes and those players who came in put in some really, really good performances, particularly in the second half.

“You just want a fully fit squad, which we haven’t got unfortunately. Players getting valuable minutes on the pitch is important as there’s another busy period coming up after the weekend.

“With Christmas and the two Cup competitions coming up there’s a lot of games to play so players are going to have to be asked to play in those games, and the more match time they get – I’m thinking of the likes of Scotty Cuthbert, Leon McSweeney and Jamie Jones – it helps and augurs well for the future.”

Slade is expecting a stern examination from Bury, who have experienced a recent upturn in form which has almost pushed them out of the relegation zone.

The O’s boss revealed he will be giving late fitness tests to David Mooney and Anthony Griffith, who were both substituted in the second half of the midweek game.

He continued: “We’ve had to manage the situation over the last four or five weeks and so far we’ve done that successfully. Now, we’ve got a really tough game against a team who have won five and drawn three of their last nine games.

“Kevin Blackwell’s really turned them around and they’re a real force, particularly at home.

“From our side of things Griff went off with a groin problem and Moons with a little bit of a hamstring.

“We’ll give them every chance to see whether they can be available for Saturday, and Nathan Clarke is still a major doubt.”
