SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD returned to the Matchroom Stadium for its second educational event with Leyton Orient FC of 2012 recently.
Young people from local schools were invited to attend the two hour event which included a workshop examining stereotypes and where they come from, a definition of racism and in what forms it occurs, a screening of the new Show Racism the Red Card film and a question and answer session with a panel of special guests.
The audience of Year 5 students from Ilford Jewish Primary School were excited to be at the event and engaged well with the activities in the first hour, sharing their opinions and asking questions. The SRtRC film was also well received, which followed a short break.
The young people were able to watch the film in the company of two of the O’s first team players, Moses Odubajo and Ryan Allsop and former professional footballer and current Show Racism the Red Card football coach Clint Easton.
All three special guests were happy to take questions from the audience and Leyton Orient FC had provided some special prizes for the panel’s favourite questions of the day, including replica shorts and socks and three O’s footballs. SRtRC were also able to provide some T-Shirts for the panel’s favourite questions.
In addition the club made sure that everyone who attended received a pair of tickets for a home game. The young people were also able to leave the event with a SRtRC goody bag including a signed Leyton Orient FC poster.
Odubajo said: “It was a really interesting day. We had the big talk, then we watched a video on footballers of all colours, describing what they’ve been through in their careers and how it has affected them.
“We finished off with a Q&A from the kids, we’ve had a good day, with the message behind of it of stamping out racism and the only way to do that is by educating everyone that it isn’t acceptable.”
