ORIENT travelled across Essex to take on local rivals Southend United in a behind closed doors friendly at the Shrimpers’ training ground.
Russell Slade again named an experienced starting line-up as goalkeeper Tommy Forecast came to the O’s rescue as Jake Larkins and Jamie Jones were rested as a precautionary measure with minor injury concerns.
With just one minute gone, the O’s almost grabbed the lead when Shaun Batt hit a speculative effort on the half volley from 30 yards that cannoned off the post.
Batt looked sharp and when Kevin Lisbie fed him again with 13 minutes gone he looked set to score but blasted over.
Two minutes later he went closer again as he cut in from the right channel and bent an effort with his left foot that rebounded back off the crossbar.
The O’s dominated possession but Marvin Wijks almost made them pay as the Orient backline switched off from a free-kick but the Dutchman who had found space at the back-post sliced well wide when he should have hit the target.
With 24 minutes gone, the Shrimpers took the lead as the O’s surrendered possession in midfield and trialist Dan Fitchett was a touch fortunate as his attempted cross looped over Forecast and into the top corner.
Eleven minutes later and the O’s were level through last year’s leading goalscorer Lisbie. Trialist Alex Addai fed the veteran in the left channel who was then hauled down for a penalty. Lisbie picked himself for the spot kick which was saved but the rebound fell kindly for him to lash home.
The O’s went ahead with 52 minutes gone as Lisbie bagged his second when he carried the ball forward and fired into the bottom corner from just outside the box to cap off a neat Orient attack.
Not long after the hour mark the O’s went further ahead with a goal of real quality. Mathieu Baudry stepped out of defence and picked out David Mooney with a cross-field pass that the striker brought down with superb touch that allowed him to fire past the goalkeeper with his next one from just inside the box on the angle.
With 20 minutes to go the Shrimpers grabbed another, a mix up between Baudry and Romain Vincelot allowed Josh Rees to steal possession and curl past Forecast.
Orient continued to press and the impressive Elliot Omozusi was played in by Vincelot on the right and crossed deep for Mooney to head back for Lisbie but somehow the striker was denied a hat-trick as his effort was deflected wide from close range.
Seven minutes from time Mark Carrington set up a grandstand finish as he prodded him after Forecast could only parry Seedy Njie’s effort but despite Orient pressing late on, it ended all square.
