Over The Summer
After consolidating their position in League One last season Graham Turner has set about assembling a squad capable of improving on their 16th place position last time around. Captain Matt Richards was one of five players released by Turner over the summer with the 65-year-old also making four new signings as part of his summer shake-up. Experienced midfielder Dave Winfield was signed from Wycombe with young forwards Akwasi Asante and John Marsden also joining the Shrews. Former O’s fan-favourite Tamika Mkandawire was also snapped up from Millwall and will take the captain’s armband this season.
An inspired display by MK Dons goalkeeper David Martin meant that the Shrews’ season began with a 0-0 draw last weekend at the Greenhous Meadow. Turner’s side then welcomed Bolton in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday but were comfortably beaten 3-1 by the Championship side. The Shrews now head to Brisbane Road for their first away fixture of the season as they look to get their season up and running after a shaky start.
Three of the club’s summer signings will miss out on this weekend’s game. Akwasi Asante missed most of pre-season with injury and looks set to sit out again, whilst Dave Winfield and John Marsden are preparing for around eight weeks on the sidelines. Winger Jon Taylor came off with an ankle injury against Bolton on Tuesday but could make a speedy return to action against the O’s. Forward Graham Burke joined on loan from Aston Villa yesterday to strengthen Graham Turner’s attacking options and should play some part at Brisbane Road.
One To Watch
Highly-rated winger Jon Taylor signed a contract extension with the Shrews over the summer after a string of impressive performances in League One last season. The 21-year-old scored against the O’s at the Matchroom Stadium last season – one of five goals in 2012/13 – and could cause Russell Slade’s side problems again at the weekend.
Football League sponsors SkyBet make the O’s favourites (5/4) to continue their 100% start to the season with Shrewsbury priced at 7/2 to pick up their first three points of the season and the draw at 5/2.
