Coping Through Football: Healthy Eating

access_time 8 years ago
In collaboration with Leyton Orient Community Sports Programme and led by project coordinator and occupational therapist Sonia Smith, almost 30 participants were encouraged to take part in a fun quiz specifically designed around healthy eating and nutrition before informative literature was distributed to all attending.
Special guests from Arsenal’s similar scheme ‘Imagine Your Goals’ were invited along as there is now a strong link between the two projects and the afternoon culminated in an 11-a-side match that took place on the recently refurbished 3G pitch, Leyton Orient continuing their fine winning run against their counterparts, running out 7-2 winners.
Justin, a regular attendee at the twice-weekly sessions, stated, “I think it was good today. It was nice to work in groups and we look forward to the match at the end, especially in the new Orient shirts!”
Due to its continuing success, the project recently purchased thirteen Leyton Orient football shirts so that the players could have more of a sense of identity with the club as well as look the part on the pitch.
“Arsenal always turned up in their football kit and we used to have to wear bibs,” continued Justin, “but now we have our kit and look good. It makes you feel better somehow.”
And Luke Howard, project leader for the Imagine Your Goals scheme said, “We’re grateful for the invite and have built a good friendship with Coping Through Football over the last couple of years or so. My group have enjoyed the day even though the result of the match wasn’t too kind for us!”
All participants were presented with certificates of attendance and the triumphant Leyton Orient team took home a medal for their efforts.
Sessions run on Tuesday’s at the Score centre in Leyton and Thursday’s at Douglas Eyre.
