A documentary is being shown on Monday 2nd June at 19:30 on BBC1 in the London region, which tells of how football and rugby reacted at the start of the Great War. The programme features the WW1 stories of Rosslyn Park Rugby Club and Clapton Orient Football Club and is presented by England Rugby World Cup winner Josh Lewsey. Supporters’ Club Deputy Chairman and O’s Great War historian Steve Jenkins talks about the Orient’s major contribution to the Footballers’ Battalion and also gives a fascinating background to some of the characters of the fine Clapton Orient side of 1914 that was to be decimated during the war. Film footage includes matchday action at the O’s, the Supporters’ Club and on location in and around Clapton and Leyton.
