This Saturday will see the launch of the fifth trip to the battlefields of northern France which on this occasion will coincide with the centenary of the Battle of the Somme in 1916.
With this special and significant anniversary in mind and following on from the successful trip undertaken this summer, along with the overwhelming request of those that travelled, we shall be staying in France for an extra day and night.
Coaches will depart from Oliver Road on the morning of Thursday July 21st and return Sunday evening July 24th 2016.
Based in Arras at the well equipped Holiday Inn Express hotel on a bed and breakfast tariff, we shall be visiting and paying our respects at the resting places of the three Clapton Orient footballers that lost their lives during the battle – William Jonas, Richard McFadden and George Scott. During our visit we shall also be spending time in Flers visiting the O’s Memorial and re-acquainting ourselves with the villagers as well as visiting other places of historical significance.
Once again we shall be using the trusted services of Anderson Travel Ltd who provide the O’s and the Supporters Club with superbly equipped coaches and we will cross the channel by ferry from Dover to Calais.
Bookings have to be made well in advance due to the huge demand in accommodation in the Somme region of northern France due the centenary commemorations – the dates we have booked were the only dates available, and it is by strange coincidence that we shall be on the Somme exactly 100 years to the day that Clapton Orient and their comrades in the Footballers’ Battalion arrived in 1916!
